One NFL personnel evaluator is a little skeptical as to how Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs will mesh with his new team.
“I question the fit in Houston,” the person said to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. “They’ve already got plenty in the passing game with Nico Collins and Tank Dell and Dalton Schultz. And you wonder how his personality fits with a young nucleus.”
Diggs’ reputation speaks for itself. During his four-year run with the Buffalo Bills, he made four Pro Bowls and finished with 5,372 receiving yards and 37 touchdowns.
That the Texans were the team to acquire him was, however, surprising for one of the reasons the personnel evaluator cited.
Collins had a breakout 2023 season, catching 80 passes for 1,297 yards and eight scores, and parlayed that into a three-year, $72.8 million extension. Dell would’ve eclipsed 1,000 yards as a rookie if he had stayed healthy as he averaged 64.5 yards per contest.
Throw in Schultz, a dependable option at tight end, and Houston wasn’t in dire need of help for the passing game.
Diggs, meanwhile, is only a year out from free agency after he and the Texans amended his deal. The 30-year-old is presumably hoping he can get at least one big payday through his performance in the season ahead.
In June, Fowler posited how some of Diggs’ physical tools could be diminishing slightly, but that isn’t a big concern because “Houston needs him as that savvy route-runner that’s going to win in the intermediate range of the field.”
That kind of role sounds very good for the Texans and a little less good for Diggs because it arguably implies a bit of a demotion.
The veteran pass-catcher is incentivized to not rock the boat too much since he’s hitting the open market next spring. His usage in Houston and how it’s impacting his value are bound to be minor subplots surrounding the team, though.
