Denver Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson has reportedly thrived with a change of scenery.
Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported on Friday that Wilson is having a “great camp” with the Broncos, with one coach revealing that the signal-caller is “rejuvenated.”
The former No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft was acquired by Denver in an April 22 trade with the New York Jets in exchange for a swap of sixth and seventh-round selections.
Wilson’s three years with the Jets were tumultuous, as he finished with a record of 3-10 as a starter during his rookie season while taking 44 sacks. He wasn’t pressured as much in his second year, although he was only able to rack up six touchdown passes compared to seven interceptions in nine appearances.
His struggles prompted New York to trade for Aaron Rodgers, although Wilson found himself under center once again after the veteran suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 1. The 25-year-old recorded a career-high 77.2 passer rating in 2023, although he finished with a record of just 4-7 in 11 starts.
Wilson’s path to a starting job in Denver won’t be easy, as the front office used the No. 12 overall pick in the 2024 draft on former Oregon standout Bo Nix. Jarrett Stidham, who started two games for the Broncos in 2023, is also in the mix.
Even if he isn’t able to secure the first-string job in 2024, Wilson’s reported revitalization following the trade could help his long-term future in the NFL. He performed admirably during Denver’s preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts, completing 10 of his 13 pass attempts for 117 yards during a 34-30 victory.
Wilson’s next opportunity to battle for the starting role will come against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET.
