Jordan Love’s contract status figures to be a major talking point since he is entering the final year of his deal, and Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk provided an update on the situation Sunday.
“We’ve poked around a bit on the talks,” Florio wrote. “There’s a feeling that the ball is currently in the team’s court.
“We also explored whether the primary sticking point is money or structure. We’re told it’s more money than structure, but that a contract like the one Love and the Packers are negotiating has plenty of components.”
Notably, Florio also reported Love will not be holding out but could hold in and not practice as the two sides continue to negotiate.
There was no shortage of uncertainty surrounding Aaron Rodgers’ future in his final years with the Packers, and there could be some motivation from the front office to avoid any of that drama when it comes to Love.
That could especially be the case after Love proved last year he can be an effective quarterback in the NFL.
Selecting him in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft despite having Rodgers and a contender that could have used an additional playmaker was a head-turning choice, but he answered any lingering questions about his potential during his first season as a starter in 2024.
Green Bay made the playoffs and went 9-8 in Love’s starts as he completed 64.2 percent of his passes for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
It didn’t just make the playoffs, it stunned the Dallas Cowboys in a 48-32 Wild Card Round win on the road before pushing the eventual NFC champion San Francisco 49ers in a 24-21 loss in the Divisional Round.
Love looked comfortable under the playoff spotlight and threw for five touchdowns to two interceptions in those two contests.
The question now is when the Packers will reward him and make him the no-doubt franchise quarterback of the future with a long-term deal.
It could be some time, but it would be shocking if the two sides don’t eventually come to an agreement that will allow the front office to start focusing elsewhere and building a contender around the quarterback.
