Trevor Lawrence’s season is now reportedly over.
After a scary hit from Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair left him concussed, the Jacksonville Jaguars placed the quarterback on the injured reserve list on Wednesday.
While this move could have allowed him to return after four games, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Lawrence will also undergo surgery to repair his AC joint injury. This removes any opportunity for the player to return with five weeks remaining in the regular season.
Lawrence suffered the shoulder injury in Week 9, which forced him to miss a pair of games, making his return last Sunday.
Before the injury, Lawrence had 2,045 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 10 games. Last season, Lawrence threw for 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, enough to land him a massive five-year, $275 million extension this offseason.
The Jags have a backup with starting experience in Mac Jones, who spent the first three seasons of his career with the New England Patriots. Jones, who is looking to prove he’s capable of being a starting quarterback, had a rough showing in his first start this year as he threw for 111 yards and two interceptions in a loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
With Lawrence’s season now seemingly over, Jones will get plenty of reps to close out the year and the Jaguars will go into the offseason hoping to make strides in getting better.
