Members of the Pittsburgh Steelers offense are upset with wide receiver George Pickens after he appeared to jog for a pass from quarterback Justin Fields against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday.
Per DK Pittsburgh’s Dejan Kovacevic, one veteran on offense said Fields’ pass was “a perfect ball” and said its placement was exactly where Pickens would have been “had he bothered running.”
Kovacevic also noted that the member of the offense spat out a “series of invectives” about the play.
Pickens has had a forgetful start to the season, recording just 310 receiving yards and failing to find the endzone through five games. He had his worst game of the year on Sunday as he recorded just 26 yards on three receptions.
In his second season in the league a year ago, Pickens had 1,140 receiving yards and five touchdowns, and many expected him to make a third-year leap. So far, he hasn’t shown much improvement.
Kovacevic noted the disparity in snaps among Steelers’ receivers on Sunday. Van Jefferson played 47 of 58 snaps, Calvin Austin played 44 of 58 snaps and Pickens played just 34 of 58 snaps.
Whether the lack of snaps was due to his effort on plays like the one mentioned is unclear, but head coach Mike Tomlin indicated that it wasn’t.
“We just wanted to minimize his reps in an effort to get more productivity,” Tomlin said, per Kovacevic. “We’re just trying to manage in terms of the totality of the big picture. He wasn’t less of a focal point in terms of our intentions of what we wanted to do offensively, but we did want to cut his reps a little bit in an effort to get higher quality play, just in general.”
Pittsburgh cutting Pickens’ reps didn’t lead to a higher quality of play on Sunday, though, so it might be time for a new game plan for the receiver.
Sunday’s matchup marked back-to-back losses—both of which have been by three points—following a 3-0 start. The Steelers will be on the road against the Las Vegas Raiders this week, where they will look to get more effort from Pickens.
