The Las Vegas Raiders will not consider trading wide receiver Davante Adams while he is sidelined “on a week-to-week basis” after suffering a hamstring injury during practice on Thursday, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
According to Schefter, trading Adams “is not currently an option” for the Raiders, who considered dealing the receiver “a non-starter” this offseason.
Raiders leadership turned down “at least two teams” that reached out about a potential trade for Adams this summer, per Schefter.
The Raiders announced on Friday that Adams would miss Sunday’s home game against the Cleveland Browns with the injury.
Through three games Adams leads his team with 209 receiving yards. Earlier this month the wideout denied rumors that he is not “happy” to play in Las Vegas amid the Raiders’ 1-2 start to the season.
This offseason’s trade rumors surrounding Adams spiked last weekend when head coach Antonio Pierce criticized unspecified players after the Raiders dropped a 36-22 loss to the struggling Carolina Panthers at home last Sunday.
“As the game went on, I think there was definitely some individuals that made business decisions,” Pierce told reporters after the loss. “And we’ll make business decisions going forward, as well.”
Schefter indicated that he does not believe these decisions will include seeking a trade for Adams.
Adams is technically signed for two more seasons after this campaign, but according to Spotrac, it is “fair to consider 2024 a walk year” for Adams given that his salary is not guaranteed for the 2025 or 2026 seasons.
Because he is essentially playing this season on a one-year, $17.5 million contract, per Spotrac, Adams would likely be a desirable deadline pickup for a contender, especially given Schefter’s report that has had received trade interest from “multiple” suitors this summer.
Whether or not the Raiders end up considering an eventual deal could hinge on whether the team is able to climb out of the 1-2 hole.
The team will have to launch that recovery on Sunday without Adams, who first appeared on the Raiders’ injury report with the hamstring issue on Thursday, one day before he was ruled out for Sunday’s contest against the Browns.
According to Schefter, Adams “pulled up lame” while “grabbing his hamstring” toward the end of Thursday’s practice.
“As one source told ESPN this weekend, wide receivers and hamstring injuries are not a good combination,” Schefter wrote.
The Raiders are also preparing to take on the Browns while missing a star defensive player in edge rusher Maxx Crosby, who was ruled out with an ankle injury on Saturday.
Absences are unusual for both Crosby, who has not missed a game in five prior NFL campaigns, and Adams, who was last sidelined for a game in 2021 while playing for the Green Bay Packers. The Raiders will need to work to overcome those losses on both offense and defense as Gardner Minshew gets another shot as QB1 following his Week 3 benching.
