After the Dallas Cowboys fell to 3-3 with a blowout 47-9 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, there’s reportedly been speculation that head coach Mike McCarthy could be in danger of being replaced by a coaching legend.
According to Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports, “many around the league wonder if Dallas could become the primary landing spot for” former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick this offseason.
Schultz added that “multiple sources” said Belichick has a “really great” relationship with the Jones family.
Belichick is spending the 2024 season as an analyst on multiple networks. He surprisingly went unhired last offseason after parting ways with the Patriots following his 23-year tenure.
McCarthy has coached the Cowboys since 2020. Despite success in the regular season with three straight 12-5 finishes, the team has struggled to produce in the playoffs, never making it past the Divisional Round. Last season, Dallas suffered an embarrassing 48-32 upset loss to the seventh-seeded Green Bay Packers at AT&T Stadium.
Including the playoff loss, the Cowboys have now lost four straight games at home. The team had previously put together a 16-game home win streak that was the second-longest in franchise history.
“I’m not a guy to hit the panic button,” quarterback Dak Prescott said after the loss. “You never prepare for that or think that can happen the way it did today, here at home, again. Now dropping three at home, a place that we’ve been great.”
Dallas will be on a bye in Week 7 before returning to action on Oct. 27 in a Sunday Night Football showdown against the San Francisco 49ers. If the Cowboys don’t turn things around quickly, McCarthy could be out of a job before his contract runs out at the end of the season.
