An offseason addition to the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver room is reportedly expected to miss the entirety of the regular season.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, who was placed on injured reserve Friday due to a shoulder injury that requires surgery, is not expected to suit up for the Chiefs this year. He could be back on the field for the postseason but is not expected to return earlier than mid-January.
According to Schefter, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Brown is expected to miss “months” rather than “weeks” because of the injury.
Brown suffered the injury on the first play of the Chiefs’ Aug. 10 preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
According to Schefter, Chiefs’ vice president for sports medicine and performance Rick Burkholder said Brown was “doing great in rehab,” but upon a final evaluation, a bone in Brown’s shoulder had moved, leading to the decision to have surgery.
Brown agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $11 million with the Chiefs in March, becoming one of the biggest additions for Kansas City this offseason. He spent the past two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, recording 709 receiving yards and three touchdowns in 2022 and 574 receiving yards and four touchdowns in 2023.
The fifth-year player’s best season came in 2021 with the Baltimore Ravens when he recorded 1,008 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
With Brown likely out for the year, the Chiefs will look to the rest of their receiving core to step up and aid star quarterback Patrick Mahomes as Kansas City looks to make history by winning a third consecutive Super Bowl.
Along with star tight end Travis Kelce, the Chiefs return their second-leading receiver from 2023 Rashee Rice, who had 103 receiving yards in Week 1. First-round pick Xavier Worthy also showed promise in his debut with 47 receiving yards, 21 rushing yards and two total touchdowns against the Ravens.
