As usual, there’s expected to be NFL general manager turnover this offseason.
Per Mike Jones of The Athletic, “people around the league predict three to five teams will hire new general managers this offseason, hoping that a change at the leading personnel position can spark improvement.”
Jones listed general managers Trent Baalke of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Chris Ballard of the Indianapolis Colts and Joe Schoen of the New York Giants on the hot seat.
The Las Vegas Raiders’ Tom Telesco and the Cleveland Browns’ Andrew Berry were listed in the “pressure mounting” section.
All five general managers listed have concerning records, but the three listed on the hot seat have serious concerns.
The Jaguars have gone 2-14 since Nov. 12, 2023 and 23-39 since Baalke took over in 2021.
“Baalke has been blessed with high draft picks, ample cap space and the patience and support of owner Shad Khan, yet he has failed to turn the Jaguars into a contender,” Jones wrote.
“Charged with addressing the team’s most pressing areas of need, Baalke has repeatedly swung and missed and now is headed for his second double-digit-loss season in four years.”
It’s been a rough stretch for the Jags, whose arrow was pointing up following an AFC South title and a postseason win in 2022. But an 8-3 start led to a 1-5 finish and a year outside the playoffs in 2023. Now the 2-9 Jags are in position to finish with the first overall draft pick.
The same goes for the New York Giants in the third year under Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.
Like the Jags, the Giants enjoyed a promising 2022 season, which saw the team win nine games and take down the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Wild Card round.
Also like the Jags, the Giants floundered in 2023. They went 6-11 after starting 2-8, having no real hope after October. Now Big Blue has hit rock bottom, going 2-9 after 11 games. The team has regressed significantly since the promising 2022 season and could very well break the franchise record for most single-season losses (13) in history.
In Indianapolis, if the Colts miss the playoffs this season, then they’ll have failed to make the postseason for the sixth time in Ballard’s eight years at the helm.
In fairness to Ballard, he was dealt a huge curveball in Aug. 2019 when quarterback Andrew Luck retired. Indianapolis has played quarterback roulette ever since, although the hope is that second-year pro Anthony Richardson could be the answer.
However, Indianapolis still hasn’t gotten it done despite higher expectations over the years. And now this year’s Colts are 5-7, two games back of the Denver Broncos for the final AFC wild card spot and the Houston Texans for the AFC South crown.
A late-season surge to capture the wild card or the division title could certainly help Ballard’s cause, though. It certainly helps that four of the Colts’ five remaining games are against two- or three-win teams, with the other on the road against the Broncos that they are chasing.
