Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs is reportedly set to miss the remainder of the 2024 season due to a knee injury.
According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, Diggs is set to undergo season-ending surgery on his knee ailment.
Diggs had already been ruled out for Sunday’s road game against the Carolina Panthers with a “knee issue that has bothered him the past few weeks,” per ESPN’s Todd Archer.
After starting last week’s 27-20 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, Diggs commented on his health, telling reporters: “I felt OK. Just dealing with the same issue as I was before, but other than that, I was just fighting through it and pushing.”
Diggs, 26, missed all but two games last season after suffering a torn ACL. He returned in time for the start of the 2024 campaign, but missed the team’s Week 11 and 12 games before returning last week against Cincinnati.
Originally a second-round pick out of Alabama in 2020, Diggs quickly established himself as one of the most productive corners in the NFL.
During his second season in 2021, Diggs led the league with 11 interceptions and also had a career-high 21 passes defended en route to being named a Pro Bowler and First Team All-Pro.
Diggs has selected to the Pro Bowl again in 2022 by virtue of his 59 tackles, three picks and 14 passes defended.
Through 11 games this season, Diggs had recorded 42 tackles, 11 pass breakups and two picks, bringing his career interception total to 20 in 58 games.
Dallas had one of the best defenses in the NFL last season, ranking fifth in both total defense and scoring defense, and fifth against the pass.
However, defensive coordinator Dan Quinn left to become head coach of the Washington Commanders, leaving head coach Mike McCarthy to bring in former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer as his replacement.
The Cowboys defense has fallen off considerably since then, ranking 26th in total defense, 31st in scoring defense and 23rd in pass defense, which is a big reason why they are a disappointing 5-8 on the year.
Injuries have undoubtedly played a significant role in the drop-off, as Diggs, cornerback DaRon Bland, pass-rushers Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence, and linebacker Eric Kendricks have all missed time.
With Diggs now set to miss the rest of the season, the Cowboys will have to lean on Amani Oruwariye, Andrew Booth and C.J. Goodwin as potential starting cornerback options alongside Bland and nickel corner Jourdan Lewis.
