The Detroit Lions have a few positions under the microscope on what is a supremely talented roster entering the 2025 offseason, but the wide receiver position isn’t exactly one of them.
Sure, the Lions do need to re-sign Tim Patrick or bring someone else in to replace him, but we’re talking about a No. 4 option in the offense behind Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta, so the need isn’t dire.
But if the Lions want to go big in adding to the wide receivers room, they may have an option in Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who recently revealed that the Rams are going to trade him.
“I was informed that the team will be seeking a trade immediately and will be working with me and my family to find the right place to continue competing for championships,” Kupp said in a statement. “I don’t agree with the decision and always believed it was going to begin and end in LA.
“Still, if there’s one thing that I have learned over the years: there are so many things that are out of your control, but it is how you respond to these things that you will look back on and remember.”
In the wake of Kupp’s announcement, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler speculated (this is not a report) about some possible landing spots for the former Super Bowl MVP and the Lions were mentioned as one of them.
“As far as early teams that people are bantering about, Pittsburgh Steelers looked into Cooper Kupp at the trade deadline last season,” Fowler said. “They still have a need there. Washington could look for a complement to Terry McLaurin. The Patriots would be foolish not to at least check in on this given their receiver situation.
“And here are a few surprises for you: Detroit Lions. Jared Goff came in the league with Cooper Kupp. That’s instant chemistry. And then doesn’t this feel a Kansas City Chiefs move a little bit?”
As Fowler notes, Kupp has a connection with quarterback Jared Goff after the two played together in Los Angeles, and he would provide an upgrade over Patrick as the team’s No. 3 wide receiver. However, there are plenty of reasons to think this won’t happen.
For starters, any team acquiring Kupp would have to absorb $20 million this year and $19.85 million next year. That’s a hefty cost when you consider Kupp is set to turn 32, has a troubling injury history the past three years and will require draft capital to acquire.
Now, Fowler reports the Rams would be willing to pick up some of Kupp’s money, but even still the Lions would have to give up a draft pick for him, something we don’t see Detroit doing for a need that isn’t a high priority.
If the Rams ended up cutting Kupp, which doesn’t seem likely, the Lions could then throw their hat in the ring, but only for the right price.
