The Kansas City Chiefs have done everything this fan base could have wanted up to this point on the season. We have seen this team finish out some ugly games with wins, at times look like the Chiefs of old, ride the back of their elite defense and, despite some significant injuries, they remain undefeated.
Yes, at 7-0, the Chiefs are well-within reason of believing in the dream of a three-peat. Yet, that doesn’t mean Brett Veach is resting on his laurels.
No, in fact we’ve witnessed the exact opposite. With injuries to players like Hollywood Brown, Rashee Rice, Isiah Pacheco and now Jaylen Watson, among others, the Chiefs have stayed aggressive in filling their holes.
Whether it be signing free agents or making a couple of trades already, the Chiefs are quite serious about making this run. And, after trading for DeAndre Hopkins and Josh Uche recently, one could argue that Veach is as serious as he’s ever been in loading up for a run.
With the NFL trade deadline coming up on November 5, which happens to be this next Tuesday, Kansas City may not be done. As a matter of fact, there are multiple outlets speculating over an incoming cornerback trade.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler wrote, just today in fact, that the Chiefs are monitoring the cornerback market and are “open” to a move at the position. He noted former Chiefs free agents like Steven Nelson and Marcus Peters are still out there, too, for what it’s worth.
One name that’s been floated out there in trade whispers for a little while is New Orleans Saints veteran Marshon Lattimore.
The only current hang-up for a Lattimore trade is the fact that he’s struggled with a hamstring injury as of late. Of course, to pull off a trade, Lattimore would need to pass a physical and the Chiefs would have to be comfortable with the move.
Now, if Lattimore is able to pass the physical and proves to return to health, he’d be the ideal move for Kansas City, here. The four-time Pro Bowl corner could be on the way out of New Orleans mainly because of salary concerns, as the Saints are in a tough spot for the foreseeable future.
Because of the Saints’ current struggles, you might not realize just how good he’s been this year. On the season, Lattimore is allowing the second-lowest opposing quarterback rating of his career (69.1). He has played 257 coverage snaps this year, per Pro Football Focus, and has yet to give up a touchdown.
If you put that type of talent on this Steve Spagnuolo defense, there would be absolutely no stopping them. As long as Patrick Mahomes is under center when it really matters, the offense will be fine. You have that type of championship-defense on the other side?
Curtains.
