Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay gets a lot of acclaim in the league. He’s coached one of the most successful teams since he took over in 2017, made two Super Bowl appearances, won one and has made the playoffs in four of the past five seasons.
He’s also one of the most popular coaches among his peers.
In two interviews with CBS Sports at the 2025 NFL Combine, coaches from around the NFL joked that Sean McVay is one of the top coaches most likely to do two things: Win at a bench press and sweet talk the referees during a game.
Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales and Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris both picked McVay as a “sleeper” candidate to win the bench press, while others picked Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell.
“Sean McVay is pretty strong,” Morris said. “He’s compact.”
A head coach bench press competition would be a sight to see, and McVay could certainly be a contender. Remember when he did 100 pushups in four minutes? A McVay vs. Campbell vs. Mike Vrabel battle would be must-see TV.
In another interview, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head Todd Bowles picked McVay as the best sweet-talker.
“I can’t tell what he’s saying,” Bowles said, “but he looks good saying it.”
While it’s hard to know McVay’s purported sweet talking worked, the Rams were one of the least-penalized teams in the NFL in 2024, per NFLpenalties.com. So, at the very, least McVay coached his squad well enough to not commit penalties.
