One of the most interesting dominoes that will fall this offseason is quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is set to be looking for a new home after the New York Jets informed the future Hall of Famer that he won’t be brought back.
The expectation is that the Jets will cut Rodgers, which will allow him to sign with any team. We’ve seen Rodgers’ name thrown around for teams that don’t have a quarterback currently, like the Las Vegas Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers, for example.
But could there be a sleeper team out there that currently has a quarterback but may need a new one soon? Of course, we’re talking about the Los Angeles Rams, who could end up trading Matthew Stafford this offseason.
The idea of Rodgers going to the Rams was brought up by a general manager who spoke to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio in the wake of the Stafford trade news last week. The GM predicted that Los Angeles would trade Stafford to the New York Giants, which would then lead to Rodgers signing with the Rams.
“Based on recent reports and public comments and other things churning in the broader NFL rumor mill, one experienced G.M. has a prediction as to how the Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers companion mysteries will be resolved,” Florio wrote.
“Step one, Stafford gets traded to the Giants. Step two, Rodgers signs with the Rams.”
Florio goes on to explain that the general manager could see the Giants making a play for Stafford with general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll being on the hot seat and needing to win now.
The GM then thinks Rodgers could sign a “sweetheart deal” to play for the Rams.
“As to the first part, the logic goes like this. Stafford wants a raise over the $27 million the Rams are due to pay him in 2025. If Stafford and the Rams can’t work it out — and if the Giants (with a coach and/or a G.M. on the hot seat) want to make a big swing in the hopes of winning now — they’d be a candidate to pay him and to give the Rams fair and proper trade compensation,” Florio explained.
“As to the second part, there’s a belief that Rodgers’s desire to play for the Rams will get him to do a sweetheart deal,” Florio added. “That frees up cash and cap space to be used in 2025 or banked for the coming wave of second contracts, starting in 2026 with receiver Puka Nacua.”
We could definitely see a desperate Giants front office making an aggressive push for a quarterback who can help the team win now, but it remains to be seen if the veteran signal-caller would be open to playing for a New York squad that isn’t close to competing for anything significant.
Granted, Stafford doesn’t have a no-trade clause, so he can’t exactly control where he goes, but one would assume the Rams will work with him to make sure he ends up in a spot he wants to be. The Giants may not qualify as that.
As for Rodgers to the Rams, it would make total sense if Los Angeles does indeed part with Stafford. He’d keep the Rams competitive in 2025 while also giving the franchise more time to find a long-term answer, or develop one if they draft someone in April.
We continue to believe that the Rams will get something done with Stafford. But if he does get dealt — and no matter where he gets dealt — it’s realistic to think Los Angeles could turn to Rodgers in the short term to fill the void, and Rodgers will almost certainly have interest in playing for an offensive guru like Sean McVay.
