NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — While workers are busy on the Titans new $2.1 billion stadium, the NFL wants upgrades at the current Nissan Stadium before the season starts.
The Titans CFO, Shannon Myers, says there’s about $80,000 worth of investments into the current Nissan Stadium that need to be made before the first preseason game on August 10.
The future domed Titans stadium is expected be done for the 2027 NFL season. But in the meantime, the Titans have to keep up with the current Nissan Stadium.
Myers explains they need to invest $50,000 for stadium step repairs for fan safety.
“There’s several sections in the lower and upper bowl where that is faded, so wanting to add that for patron safety to make sure they can see those steps going up and down,” Myers said.
Myers says they will be adding yellow security striping to steps inside the lower and upper bowls.
She adds they’re investing another $30,000 for electrical upgrades on the sidelines.
“This is for their player injury systems to communicate to each other, so those updates are going to be done in these upcoming weeks,” Myers said.
Titans spokesperson says they are keeping upgrades to a minimum and are doing what’s necessary to be safe and operable.
Mark Cunningham with the government watchdog group Beacon Center of Tennessee says it’s more tax dollars going into funding a stadium.
“This extra $80,000, it just continues to remind that this funding is never done. Taxpayers are always going to keep having to pay for these stadiums and ultimately, when the contract’s up, they may threaten to go somewhere else or force taxpayers to give more of their money,” Cunningham said.
Cunningham emphasizes especially with a new $2.1 billion stadium that is currently being built, he’s concerned these expenses will keep adding up in the time being.
As for the new stadium, the Titans spokesperson say they’re finishing the excavation process this week and fans can watch the progress on their live camera.
