The Seattle Seahawks have several interesting contract decisions coming up this offseason, including whether or not wide receiver DK Metcalf will receive the second extension of his career. Metcalf has a year left on his existing deal (cap hit: $31.875 million) and we have seen several high-profile receivers like Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams, and Stefon Diggs dealt in recent offseasons.
ESPN recently released its annual article of offseason predictions made by anonymous NFL coaches, team executives, scouts, and other personnel figures. One of the big highlights was the Seahawks sending Metcalf down I-5 to Inglewood to play for the Los Angeles… Chargers.
“The Seahawks can still get good value for him, and he could pair with Ladd McConkey for a good inside-out tandem,” an NFL coordinator said of a move to the Chargers. “[Justin] Herbert to Metcalf would be scary. I think [Los Angeles] will be looking to help the quarterback in a big way.”
Yes, I know it’s the “anonymous NFL personnel” story again, which means we’re in the purely speculative part of the offseason. It’s going to generate clicks and comments and you know it, and it isn’t like Metcalf’s future is some completely unfathomable discussion.
The Chargers have the No. 22 overall pick by virtue of their Wild Card exit against the Houston Texans. They have picks in every round of this year’s draft, including a pair of sixths. While Ladd McConkey was a breakout receiver as a rookie, the disappointing career of Quentin Johnston and the lack of depth at the position will undoubtedly make LAC look for receivers this offseason.
I don’t really see this happening and I also do not believe Metcalf’s value is that of a first-round pick at the moment. It would probably have to take something too good to refuse for the Seahawks to move on from their only speedy downfield threat, who’s otherwise had better and healthier seasons than the one he’s coming off of.
