Micah Parsons is coming under fire from national media analysts for his comments about head coach Mike McCarthy.
Following Sunday’s 34-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Parsons was asked about the possibility of McCarthy, who is in the final year of his contract, not coaching the Cowboys next season.
“That’s above my pay grade about if Mike is coaching again next year,” Parsons said. “All coaching aside, coaching, you know, Mike can leave and go wherever he wants. But guys I kind of feel bad for is guys like Zack Martin and guys who might be on their last year and on their way out, because that’s who I want to go hold the trophy for. You want to win games and do great things with those type of legends who put in more time and work than Mike McCarthy ever did. Those are the guys that I have so much sympathy and hurt for.”
ESPN NFL analyst Rex Ryan, who interviewed for the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator position over the summer, took exception with Parsons’ comments.
“He doesn’t deserve that. Mike McCarthy, no coach deserves that,” Ryan said during ESPN’s Get Up on Monday. “No player is putting in the hours that a head coach is, I can assure you. Look, you can have some private issue, go to the owner, go to whoever, go to Mike McCarthy. But why the hell do you think that you need to say that? Why do you need to hurt this man? Who do you think gets blamed for everything? He gets it anyway, so why are you piling on?
“Dead man walking? Yeah, he is. But you know what? He’s professional as hell. He hasn’t once blamed a damn player, ever. it’s bulls—.”
Fellow ESPN analyst Damien Woody also criticized Parsons.
“Who the hell [does] Micah Parsons think he is talking like that after a game? Bro, you’ve been missing all these games with the injury and last time I checked, the head coach is a Super Bowl-winning head coach,” Woody said. “That’s what’s going on with all these podcast boys out here in the locker room… That’s disrespectful what Micah Parsons did to Mike McCarthy in that situation.”
Parsons responded with multiple posts on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“You would think guys who played and coached the sport would have better journalism!! But I was very wrong!! They trying to use my name image and likeness with dallas cowboys to continue to tear the beautiful organization with drama and bad media attentions! Be better @GetUpESPN,” Parsons said in apost.
Parsons said he will address his comments about McCarthy and the backlash on his podcast, “The Edge with Micah Parsons” on Monday.
Parsons has three sacks and three tackles for loss in five games this year. He returned to the lineup on Sunday after missing four games with a high-ankle sprain.
