About two years ago, Aaron Rodgers came out of a darkness retreat with the realization he wanted to continue playing football and he wanted to do it with the New York Jets.
The partnership with the Green Bay Packers had run its course after 18 seasons, but he saw a willing partner who wanted him on the field.
The Jets signed him to a three-year contract with the hopes that the future Hall of Famer would transform the organization, and make the franchise a winner and champion.
None of that happened.
So, today, the Jets made their intentions known: they want out of the relationship early. And it ends with a couple social media posts.
The Jets announced on Thursday what had been previously reported that they were set to cut ties with Rodgers.
“Last week we met with Aaron and shared that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback,” new head coach Aaron Glenn and new general manager Darren Mougey said in a statement. “It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures.” That new management team had also reportedly told Rodgers he no longer could appear on his favorite platform, “The Pat McAfee Show.”
Jets CEO Woody Johnson, who flew out to California two years ago to meet Rodgers and seal the deal, added the quarterback’s “arrival in 2023 was met with unbridled excitement and I will forever be grateful that he chose to join us to continue his hall of fame career.”
But it’s a career that again is at a crossroads after two frustrating seasons. Rodgers first suffered a devastating Achilles injury in the first game of his Jets career in 2023, forcing him to miss the rest of the season. Then, Rodgers endured a challenging 5-12 season in 2024 where the head coach and general manager were fired.
Despite the Rodgers era in New York falling flat, the team thanked him for “everything” he’s given the team. NFL fans on social media, especially those in the Jets circle, were curious on what exactly Rodgers provided the team.
Fans and analysts have some thoughts on Aaron Rodgers’ next destination. He’ll be a free agent for the first time in his career.
The Jets moving on from Rodgers isn’t about the money.
If it was, they would have brought him back. They’re on the hook for $49 million in “dead money” tied to his three-year, $112.5 million contract that he signed two years ago, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
After winning the Super Bowl on the field, Howie Roseman will begin building a roster to defend his title. That work starts with free agency and culminates with
