MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) — As 2025 begins, many individuals are setting their sights on healthier lifestyles, with fitness goals topping the list of New Year’s resolutions. A recent Statista poll indicates that numerous people plan to hit the gym to start the new year right.
Josh Hughes, a fitness trainer at HYLO Fitness Mount Pleasant, shared insights on how to make fitness journeys more successful.
“Just to keep up overall health and really just help you set goals and keep things kind of in balance,” Hughes said.
Hughes, who has over a decade of experience, noted that gyms often see a significant influx of new members at the start of the year.
“We actually have a huge influx, everybody at the beginning of the year likes to reset their fitness goals,” he said.
While maintaining these goals can be challenging, Hughes emphasized that achieving them is possible. He suggested finding a gym with a flexible schedule to help establish and maintain positive habits.

“It’s really important to really figure out what your routine is,” Hughes said. “That you can really start establishing habits to maintain, you can start to see the progress really. It’s a positive habit. You know you’re doing self-health. You’re doing that self-care aspect of it.”
Hughes added that most people who find the right fit tend to stick with their programs.
“Once you get into and you start to build the same routines, come to the same classes with the same people, you know, build a community. And it becomes more engaging,” he said.
To avoid burnout, Hughes recommended taking a variety of classes and choosing a place where trainers can help achieve personalized goals.
“Everything is going to be catered to that specific person. So it’s not really about what the guy next to you is doing. It’s your class, your workout,” Hughes said.
Tidelands Health also offered tips for keeping New Year’s goals, including writing them down, maintaining healthy sleeping habits, being realistic, and finding a strong support system.
