SPORTS HALL OF FAME NEWS RELEASE

The New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame announced on Friday, Dec. 6, that it will release a series of press releases over the coming weeks, highlighting the distinguished individuals selected for its 2024 Hall of Fame Class. This is the third announcement of three, concluding on Dec. 20, with each press release featuring a detailed profile of two newly inducted members.

The third in the series of press releases welcomes former New Mexico State Aggies Fredd Young and Randy Brown.

Fredd Young- is a 1984 graduate of New Mexico State University, Young was a 1981, 1982 & 1983 First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference member, a 1983 Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American Team, and a 1983 Sporting News Honorable Mention All-American team member while amassing 400 tackles during his four-year career at NMSU. These statistics led him to be inducted into the NMSU Hall of Fame in 1991 and the Aggie Legend Ring of Honor in 2007.

Young was drafted in the 3rd round of the 1984 NFL draft with the 76th overall pick. Young made his name for himself as a special teams player early in his NFL career, making the NFL Pro Bowl in 1984 and 1985 as a special teamer. He continued his impressive career with consecutive Pro Bowls in 1986 and 1987 as a linebacker. Young finished his career with the Indianapolis Colts, amassing 601 tackles, 21 quarterback sacks, and three interceptions.

Young was recognized after his career concluded by the Seahawks by being named to the 2010 35th anniversary team, and in 2016 was honored as one of the Top 40 players of all time in Seahawks history.

To be counted as one of the legends and icons of sports who have paved the way before me is a privilege I will cherish forever,” said Fredd Young, New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame Inductee. “Your belief in my contributions to the world of sports means more than words can fully capture. I also want to thank my NMSU Aggies, Seattle Seahawks, and Indianapolis Colts family. Also, my mom, rest her soul, for all her unwavering support throughout my journey. Without her, this Sports moment would not have been possible. Every achievement in my career resulted from countless hours of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication.”

Randy Brown – The former New Mexico State Aggie played basketball for the Aggies for two memorable seasons (1989-91). A two-time All-Big West Conference First Team honoree, Brown averaged 12.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.9 assists in 60 appearances for the Aggies. During Brown’s career in Las Cruces, New Mexico State clinched a share of the Big West regular season title in the 1989-90 season and made a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. Due to his contributions, Brown was elected into the NMSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997 and was part of the All-Century Team in 2007.

Following the conclusion of the Aggies’ 1990-91 campaign, Brown began his quest to play in the NBA. The Sacramento Kings selected the backcourt star as the 31st overall pick of the 1991 NBA Draft and spent four seasons with the Kings. It was with the Chicago Bulls, however, that Brown’s winningest days in the NBA occurred. From 1995-2000, Brown suited up for his hometown club alongside the likes of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippin and Dennis Rodman. Through his five-year run with the Bulls, Brown won a trio of NBA titles and through his 12-year NBA career the Chicago, Ill., native amassed 3,148 points, 1,420 assists and 722 steals.

The New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame will host a press conference to welcome the new members of the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame on December 28th at 9 a.m. at the Pit on the campus of the University of New Mexico, followed by a recognition of new inductees at the New Mexico Bowl during the game.

The induction ceremony for the new inductees will occur on the weekend of June 27-29, 2025, with the induction ceremony being at the Albuquerque Convention Center at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 29.
