The Alabama Crimson Tide’s brief stay atop the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll ended after Saturday’s uninspiring 94-85 home loss to rival Auburn.
The biggest game of the regular season for Nate Oats’ team today resulted in a loss to the Tigers, who never trailed in a hostile Coleman Coliseum and led by as many as 14 points.
As such, Auburn (23-2) reclaimed the top spot in Monday’s new Coaches Poll. Alabama (21-4) fell three spots to No. 4. The Florida Gators (No. 2, 22-3) and Duke Blue Devils (No. 3, 22-3) shot past Alabama, who landed one spot ahead of the Houston Cougars at No. 5.
Alabama’s next opponent saw a major rise in Monday’s poll. The Missouri Tigers (19-6) climbed six spots to No. 16 after beating Oklahoma and Georgia in conference play last week. Alabama and Missouri meet Wednesday night in Columbia for another 8 p.m. (CT) tipoff. The game will be televised on SEC Network.
The SEC had five teams in the top 10, with the Tennessee Volunteers (21-5) falling two spots to No. 6 and the Texas A&M Aggies (20-5) rising two spots to No. 7. Further down the polls, the Kentucky Wildcats (17-8) slide three more spots to No. 21 while Mississippi State (18-7) climbed back into the Top 25 and landed at No. 23 after a big road win at Ole Miss on Saturday.
Alabama is set to host Kentucky and Mississippi State after its trip to Missouri Wednesday. Every team remaining on the Crimson Tide’s regular season schedule is now ranked in the Top 25, including Tennessee, Florida, and a rematch with Auburn.
