The Nebraska football program suffered a difficult setback despite winning its first bowl game under coach Matt Rhule.
Except this time, it was not because of a losing effort, dropped pass, injury, or otherwise. It was related to its upcoming football schedule – which will now see the Cornhuskers’ home-and-home series against Tennessee altered altogether.
The news not only caused discontent from Tennessee Athletic Director Danny White but also from Nebraska fans who had planned to attend one or both games over the next two seasons (2026 and 2027).
Nebraska Athletic Director Troy Dannen attempted to spin the narrative into a positive but was met with resistance.
“We are making plans to embark on major renovations of Memorial Stadium that may impact our seating capacity for the 2027 season,” Dannen said. “The best scenario for us is to have eight home games in 2027 to offset any potential revenue loss from a reduced capacity. The additional home games will also have a tremendous economic benefit on the Lincoln community.”
The Cornhuskers are making up those plans to guarantee eight home games against the likes of Bowling Green (Sept. 2026), Miami (OH) (Sept. 2027)a nd Northern Iowa (Sept. 2027).
Still, though, fans sounded off.
“This sucks,” one fan wrote. “I have heard from many fans that have made plans to attend. College football putting the fans last yet again.”
Another went as far as to categorize college football as slowly beginning its deadly decline.
“F*** this. More b******* that money is ruining about [college football].”
The Cornhuskers likely won’t apologize to White, nor the fanbases for not planning better in the years ahead. Now, both schools are going to have to live in the reality of a new normal/
