Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule fails to make list of top coaches in college football

Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule was left off a list naming the Top 25 College Football Coaches compiled by On3’s Andy Staples. Seven fellow Big Ten Conference coaches were put on the list.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day was second overall. Oregon head coach Dan Lanning was sixth overall. Penn State head coach James Franklin was seventh overall, while Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti and Illinois head coach Brett Bielema were 12th and 13th, respectively. Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore was 17^th, while USC head coach Lincoln Riley was 18^th.

It was certainly interesting that Rhule did not make the list, especially given that Moore was ranked as high as he was. Michigan finished 7-5 on the year, only one loss better than the Huskers.

Louisville, for example, finished 8-4, and Jeff Brohm ranked 24th on the list. The Cardinals have built a solid foundational program over the final two seasons, but Rhule could be put into this list, given how they have Brohm ranked so highly.

All of the coaches on this list are certainly deserving in one way or another. Nevertheless, their accomplishments, especially those lower on the list, are similar to what Rhule did in his second season with the program. The Nebraska head coach certainly deserved to be recognized, especially given how he led his team to their first bowl win since 2016.

If anything, this demonstrates that Nebraska might need to do a bit more to be viewed more positively nationally. The progress is certainly there, especially when you consider Nebraska finished 5-7 in 2023. The Huskers certainly need to make additional progress in 2025, but last season’s finish should have been enough to put Rhule on this list.
