The NBA season is a little over halfway done and teams are starting to emerge as true contenders across the league. With the All-Star break now here, teams can fully start to look ahead to either the offseason or the playoff push.
The Western Conference is especially competitive and could see a strong finish to the season. Here is a power ranking of how the West shakes out as we enter into the All-Star break:

Despite having star Lauri Markkanen, the Jazz still find themselves at the bottom of the standings. It’s a long rebuild for this Utah organization and fans may need to be patient with this team.
New Orleans has had an awful season with injuries hitting them all over the place. But with Zion Williamson and CJ McCollum still leading the charge, they are able to escape the bottom of this power ranking.
After a long winning streak, the Trail Blazers have come back down to earth. The dream of the postseason lasted for about a week but the likelihood remains very low for this young team.
With new point guard De’Aaron Fox, the Spurs could be a sneaky team down the stretch. However, the lack of depth around the edges could cause them to continue their playoff drought.
There aren’t many other teams that can be considered the biggest disappointment of the year. Despite the trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, Phoenix continues to struggle.
If this team misses the postseason, massive changes are likely in store this offseason.
Sacramento has had a wild year and yet they remain directly in the postseason race. First, they fired former head coach Mike Brown and then they traded away Fox to San Antonio
But this team continues to fight and it could see them get back to the postseason if things continue to trend upward.
The addition of Jimmy Butler should see this team take a jump forward in the standings but this team still has questions. The lack of depth around the stars is real and there is concern about how they will stand up come playoff time.
Butler and Steph Curry aren’t getting any younger so time is of the essence for the Warriors this season.
After making the NBA Finals a year ago, the Mavericks completely gave up on that team, sending Luka Doncic out of town. It’s still taking time to fully understand the trade but Dallas believes in the Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving pairing.
Davis is currently hurt but if health is provided, this team could be scary in the playoffs. Defense does win championships but the title window for this team could be very small.
Health is the key for the Clippers and over the past few seasons, they haven’t had much luck.
If Kawhi Leonard can stay healthy, the Clippers could make some noise in the playoffs. However, his history has shown that he can’t do that consistently so Los Angeles falls down in the rankings.
The Clippers may be ahead of the Timberwolves in the standings but Anthony Edwards is the difference here. We all saw him rise to another level in the playoffs a year ago and Minnesota should still be feared.
They may not have Karl-Anthony Towns but this team has good depth and strong defense along the roster.
Houston has been a great story all year but they have started to come back down to reality. They have been a little inconsistent of late and teams are starting to figure them out a little bit.
The Rockets still have length and could pose some issues in the postseason. This team is young and hungry, a combination that typically can do well down the stretch.
Entering the year, many didn’t see the Lakers being as good as they have been. Even with Anthony Davis out of the lineup, Los Angeles has been playing well.
Now adding in Doncic, the sky is the limit for this team and nobody will want to see them in the postseason. The only weakness for Los Angeles is their lack of size which could come back to hurt them.
After an injury-filled season last year, the Grizzlies are back and better than ever. They have reclaimed their status as one of the best teams in the West and they are a problem for opponents.
The pace that they use on the floor can give teams problems and Grind City is looking to build back for a playoff run.
Denver has won eight games in a row heading into the All-Star break and they seem to be figuring it all out. Veteran guard Russell Westbrook has looked great in this system and it has the Nuggets clicking on all cylinders.
This team will be tough to deal with in the postseason, especially with Nikola Jokic dominating again.
Oklahoma City may be the scariest team in the entire NBA. They feel like they haven’t fully hit the peak of their powers and that should put fear into the rest of the league.
Led by MVP-favorite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder are the heavy favorites to come out of the West. This team can match up with anyone and could be in line to win the championship this season.
