The Los Angeles Lakers have been continuously one of the most frequently mentioned names in NBA trade rumors. They have been linked to several centers to bolster the frontcourt behind Anthony Davis, as well as high-level wings to help on both ends of the floor. It seems apparent that their priorities lie in the frontcourt.
Walker Kessler, Jonas Valančiūnas, Brook Lopez, Zach Collins and Nikola Vučević are all names that have been floated as possible targets, although in some cases, the teams they are currently on might not be eager to part with them. However, the Atlanta Hawks might have a proven veteran they would be willing to shop.
In the last year of his contract, Clint Capela could be added to the Lakers’ frontcourt. In a recently proposed mock trade, the Lakers would send Rui Hachimura, Max Christie, Jarred Vanderbilt and two second-round picks to Georgia for Capela and Larry Nance Jr. If the Lakers don’t want to part with Hachimura, they could take on only Capela for D’Angelo Russell and Christie.
“What the Lakers have to like about Capela most is that you know he’s going to be in the right spots on the defensive end of the floor and that he’s going to continuously play his part offensively.” wrote FanSided’s Michael Saenz on Thursday. “He doesn’t need any iso opportunities on the offensive end to keep him happy and will make the most out of lob opportunities and cleaning up the basket off misses.”
Capela, even at 30, is an elite rebounder. He led the league with 14.3 boards in 2020-21 and is currently corralling 7.3 this season, although the Hawks have started giving more minutes to the younger Onyeka Okongwu.
In Los Angeles, Capela would play a familiar role and wouldn’t step on the toes of the superstars while bolstering the team’s performance on both ends of the floor.
