After a strong showing at the Olympics over the past few weeks, France’s Guerschon Yabusele turned some heads and perhaps made a case that he should be in the NBA.
If any team decides to pursue Yabusele, Real Madrid would be entitled to a relatively sizable buyout should he leave for the NBA.
Per NBA insider Marc Stein, Yabusele has one season left on his contract and has an NBA buyout of $2.5 million. Stein noted that his buyout was just $1 million before July 15.
Yabusele, who is 28, was drafted by the Boston Celtics with the 16th overall pick in 2016, but he joined the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association that season instead. He returned to the Celtics in 2017, playing with Boston’s G League affiliate.
Eventually, he spent some time in the NBA, averaging 2.3 points and 1.4 rebounds in 74 across the 2017-18 season and 2018-19 season.
After another stint in the CBL and one year in France’s professional basketball league, he signed with Real Madrid in 2021 and has found success. This season, he averaged 10.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game during the 2023-24 season.
In Saturday’s gold-medal game between France and the United States, Yabusele put up 20 points and had a memorable dunk over LeBron James.
Whether Yabusele’s performance in the Olympics will be enough to earn him a spot in the NBA is to be determined, but he certainly showed that he still has potential.
