The Lakers’ home game against the Hornets on Thursday has been postponed due to the raging LA fires, the NBA announced.
A new date for the game will be announced at a later time.
“We’re heartbroken for Los Angeles. Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this unimaginable situation,” the Lakers said in a post on X. “And our gratitude is with the first responders and all of you who come together when we need each other the most.
“Tonight’s game will be rescheduled to focus on what matters most today. We’re with you, L.A.”
Lakers coach JJ Redick been personally affected by the fires in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, having lost his home, according to ESPN.
Redick’s family evacuated the area Tuesday.
The cause of the fires is unknown, according to Los Angeles officials, but 30,000 acres have been burned and it has led to a mass exodus from the region and widespread damage.
“Our family, my wife’s family, my wife’s twin sister, they’ve evacuated. I know a lot of people are freaking out right now, including my family,” Redick said before Tuesday’s road loss to the Mavericks. “From the sound of things, with the winds coming (Tuesday night), I know a lot of people are scared. So I just want to acknowledge that. Thoughts and prayers for sure, and hope everybody stays safe.”
This is the second game scheduled to occur in Los Angeles that has been postponed due to the harrowing situation, with Wednesday’s Kings-Flames game at Crypto.com Arena also rescheduled.
The Lakers are slated to host the Spurs this Saturday and next Monday, while the Kings are away on an extended road trip.
Clippers star Kawhi Leonard left the team’s road trip on Wednesday, opting out of a game in Denver to be with family who were evacuated.
The NFL is monitoring the situation in case Monday’s Vikings-Rams playoff game in Inglewood needs to be moved, with Arizona becoming the host in such a scenario.
“The entire NBA family sends its thoughts and support to the community of Los Angeles during this challenging time,” the NBA said in its statement. “We are grateful for the thousands of local firefighters and first responders who have demonstrated bravery. Our prayers remain with those affected by the unimaginable devastation caused by the wildfires.”
