During the NBA All-Star break, there was a lot of talk about the status of the league today. The discussions ranged from improvements that could be made to who are the current faces of the league.
One of the players that was asked about whether he thinks or wants to be the face of the league was Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards. His response to not wanting to be the face of the league has been making headlines as of late.
NBA Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony sent a strong message to Edwards on 7 PM in Brooklyn in regards to his reasoning for not wanting to be the face of the NBA.
“I love Ant. But you can’t run from that. Especially when everybody is trying to give you the face. You can’t reject it and then be on four or five commercials. You can’t say I don’t want this and then you’ve got Sprite, Adidas. This is what comes with being a superstar,” Anthony replied.
He also went on in further detail and addressed the reason why Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic, and San Antonio Spurs big man Victor Wembanyama can’t be the faces of the league.
“Wemby can’t be the face of the NBA. Luka can’t be the face. Giannis can’t be the face. Shai can’t be the face because this is our sport,” Anthony added.
It’s no secret that Edwards is one of the most prolific scorers in the NBA. He has also elevated his game to a new level with his three-point shooting and his efficiency. He also has tried his best to remain out of the spotlight. Partially, Anthony is correct about the fact that Edwards has no choice but to be the face. He became just that when the comparisons to Michael Jordan began.
Perhaps as Edwards’ career progresses, he will accept more of a spotlight role and take on his responsibility as one of the top stars in the game. For the foreseeable future, it doesn’t sound like that is happening.
