NBA legend Stephon Marbury thinks that the Phoenix Suns need to add a scoring point guard to reach the next level, per Brandon Robinson. The guard he had in mind was Indiana Pacers superstar Tyrese Haliburton.
“They need a scoring point guard. They need a guy that can get them going but can really go too. Like the kid that plays for the Indiana Pacers? Tyrese [Haliburton]. He didn’t play in the Olympics that much this year. But if he gets stronger? Oh my God, he will be off the hook!” said Marbury.
The last star point guard they had was Chris Paul, who was an amazing playmaker and worked having multiple scorers on the floor to distribute to. He wasn’t a scorer, but his ability to distribute was so much better it didn’t matter. However, trading him for another scorer in Bradley Beal was not a good idea, as seen in the playoffs.
Last season, Haliburton averaged 20 points, four rebounds, and 11 assists for the Pacers. He would be a perfect fit for the Suns, but only if two things happen: He is the primary ball-handler. Other guys will have to follow a play, or catch and shoot. Iso plays will have to be limited for him to be effective. Second, the Suns need to restructure their superstars’ contracts, because adding Haliburton’s contract on top of theirs guarantees they cannot afford a good bench.
