The Dallas Mavericks traded guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in arguably the craziest blockbuster move in NBA history, landing Anthony Davis in Texas.
Davis will certainly help improve a Mavs defense that is among the best within six feet of the rim, which is what Dallas general manager Nico Harrison may have had in mind when making this deal.
“I believe that defense wins championships,” Harrison told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We’re built to win now and in the future.”
Charania relayed that Dallas approached Los Angeles recently and offered Doncic, and the Lakers brass met and believed the 25-year-old has the ability to be the face of their franchise for the next decade while giving Davis an opportunity to win now with the Mavericks.
The Mavs had major concerns about committing another supermax contract extension to Doncic this summer due to his constant conditioning issues, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.
With Davis, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, and the center tandem of Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II all expected to play a bulk of the minutes together, and depth pieces Naji Marshall and Quentin Grimes chipping in, the Mavs will still be throwing out a group that is capable of making a deep playoff run every night.
It’s also scary to imagine how tough it’s going to be for opposing teams to score near the rim with Davis and Dallas’ big man duo patrolling the painted area.
