Rookie guard Bronny James played three minutes in the Los Angeles Lakers’ season-opening win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday, but that reportedly doesn’t mean he will receive regular playing time moving forward.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Woo, it will be a surprise if Bronny getting consistent usage “becomes the norm” since the Lakers aren’t likely to “force-feed him meaningful minutes at the expense of team success.”
Bronny, who is the son of Lakers star and NBA legend LeBron James, was selected by the Lakers with the No. 55 overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft.
Although he arrived at USC as a highly touted prospect, a heart issue caused him to miss the first eight games of his freshman season in college, and he largely struggled upon making his debut, averaging just 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
Because of that, it was unclear if he had a legitimate chance to get picked when he entered the draft, but the Lakers decided to pair him with his father.
That led to plenty of accusations of nepotism, but the Lakers moved forward nonetheless, and head coach JJ Redick gave LeBron and Bronny a chance to make history Tuesday night.
Bronny checked into the game late in the second quarter alongside LeBron, making them the first father-son duo to play together in an NBA regular-season game.
The younger James’ time on the court was brief, and he finished with no points on 0-of-2 shooting to go along with one rebound.
LeBron, Anthony Davis, D’Angelo Russell, Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura started against Minnesota, and they all played at least 34 minutes.
Five different players saw action off the bench, but Bronny was the only one who played fewer than three minutes, as Jaxson Hayes, Gabe Vincent, Max Christie and rookie Dalton Knecht all logged double-digit minutes.
Woo noted that some of the Lakers’ better young players such as Knecht and Christie figure to play a lot more than Bronny moving forward, and he theorized that Bronny could spend some time in the G League at some point.
Given that the Lakers have plenty of depth and players ahead of Bronny in the pecking order, that may prove to be the best possible move for his development.
