The NBA has fined Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet $50,000 for directing profanities at officials as he was ejected in the final minute of Houston’s 104-98 home loss to the Portland Trail Blazers Saturday night. The NBA announced the fine Monday on social media.
Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet has been fined $50,000 for confronting and directing profane language toward the officiating staff near the conclusion of the Rockets’ 104-98 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Nov. 23 at Toyota Center, it was announced today by Joe Dumars, executive vice president, head of basketball operations.
VanVleet was whistled for an offensive foul as the Rockets inbounded the ball trailing, 103-98, with 4.3 seconds remaining. After the call, VanVleet pointed at all three officials and directed profanities at them, prompting the ejection. During VanVleet’s finger-pointing, he almost made contact with one official as he left the floor.
VanVleet was upset about a missed call on the previous play when he put up a 3-pointer that air-balled with 10 seconds left as the Rockets trailed by three points. VanVleet thought Blazers forward Toumani Camara fouled him on the play, but he didn’t get the whistle. The Blazers rebounded the miss and sealed the game with two free throws.
The NBA’s Last Two Minute Report ruled that Camara should’ve been called for a foul on the play, but it would’ve been a non-shooting foul.
