Heading into the final stages of group play in the 2024 NBA Cup, the winner of Group C could be determined based on the results of Friday’s games.
The Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics or Chicago Bulls all have a chance to advance to the knockout stage if they win and one other team loses.
There are also 17 different elimination scenarios involving teams in all six groups that could happen based on the results from Friday’s games.
East Group C has been wildly unpredictable so far. Four teams have one loss. Only the Washington Wizards (0-3) have been eliminated. The Atlanta Hawks already hold a win over the Boston Celtics. They also beat the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday, but that wasn’t an NBA Cup game.
Friday’s matchup between the Cavs and Hawks in Atlanta will be a group game. Atlanta can clinch Group C with a win and loss by the Chicago Bulls. Cleveland needs to win its final two games to have a chance at advancing.
The marquee game on the schedule is also the one head-to-head meeting with the most at stake for both teams. The Los Angeles Lakers, coming off their first-ever loss in an NBA Cup game on Tuesday to the Phoenix Suns, will host the Oklahoma City Thunder.
If the Thunder lose, they are eliminated from NBA Cup contention. If the Lakers lose, they will be eliminated if the Los Angeles Clippers and Portland Trail Blazers win. The Clippers are playing the Minnesota Timberwolves, while the Blazers are hosting the Sacramento Kings.
In addition to the Thunder, Teams that will be eliminated with a loss on Friday include the Timberwolves, Cavaliers, Memphis Grizzlies, Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Indiana Pacers, Miami Heat.
The Philadelphia 76ers will be eliminated if any one of the Hawks, Orlando Magic or Detroit Pistons win.
Only the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets have clinched a berth in the knockout stage so far. They, along with the Milwaukee Bucks, are the only teams that are 3-0 in group play so far. The Magic and New York Knicks can join them if they both win on Friday.
The final day of group play in the NBA Cup will be on Tuesday, with the quarterfinals set to be played on Dec. 10-11. The semifinals and finals will be played in Las Vegas on Dec. 14 and 17.
