The standout prep career of Olentangy Liberty senior Andrew Leonard reached another milestone Thursday when he announced on social media that he will play football at Findlay.
Leonard, the starting quarterback for the reigning Division I state champions, told The Dispatch that he had six or seven offers before signing with the Division II Oilers.
“It was definitely a tough decision,” he said. “I had to go see all the schools and decide what was the best fit for me. When I got (to Findlay), it felt right. Walking around the school, meeting with coaches, it’s just where I felt at home, where I thought I should be.”
The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Leonard led Liberty (14-2) to its first state title, completing 17 of 23 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns in a 28-14 win over Cincinnati Moeller on Dec. 6 in Canton.
For the season, Leonard completed 216 of 305 passes for 3,191 yards and 35 TDs with six interceptions and rushed for 541 yards and six scores on 164 carries. He was OCC-Central and district Offensive Player of the Year, first-team all-state and a Mr. Football finalist.
For his career, Leonard completed 66% of his passes for 8,201 yards and rushed for 1,150 yards with 78 total touchdowns in 42 starts.
“Andrew Leonard was the leader of this team,” Liberty coach John Sansbury said. “He’s been a captain for two years, so he deserves a ton of credit for the success we’ve had this past year. He’s a really good football player and an even better person. Findlay won’t know quite who they’re getting until he shows up and starts working because they’re going to be blown away by him.”
Leonard also excels in hockey and baseball at Liberty, helping the hockey team win the state title in 2023. It is central Ohio’s only OHSAA hockey championship.
In baseball last spring, Leonard was first-team all-OCC-Central and honorable mention all-district as a shortstop.
“This school has meant everything to me,” he said. “All the coaches, all my different teammates in all the sports, it’s just been great having their support … through my career here.”
Central Ohio signing day wrap-up
Leonard had the opportunity to play any of the three sports in college.
“Not that I wanted to rush it or get it out of the way, but it’s nice … to not have to worry about that part right now,” Leonard said. “I can just keep winning.”
Liberty’s hockey team is the No. 3 seed in the upcoming OHSAA regional tournament. The Patriots will have to win three games to get back to state.
