Monster Mini Golf is opening a new location in Turnersville Washington Township, taking over the large 22,000sf building where the Royal Bargain Dollar Store is located on the Black Horse Pike.
Monster Mini Golf is a family-oriented indoor entertainment experience with the signature aspect being a fun “glow-in-the-dark” Monster themed mini golf experience… but also includes a variety of other indoor attractions including mini bowling, laser maze, laser tag, arcade, party rooms and more!
In our area, Monster Mini Golf also operates a location in Cherry Hill on Springdale Road which has proven very successful since opening 5 years ago. Cherry Hill will remain open and this new Turnersville location is an additional location for the brand.
I spoke to local franchise owners Bob and Randi about their upcoming new Turnersville location, which at 22,000 square feet is almost 50% larger than Cherry Hill… with some of the extra space being utilized for a large laser tag room, and additional party room space.
The Camden County residents tell 42Freeway that their Cherry Hill location continues to be extremely popular, particularly on the weekends when 150-200 people are typically in the facility at the same time enjoying mini golf, arcade games and more.
They’ve been targeting a Gloucester County location almost since they opened their doors in Cherry Hill in the Summer of 2019, but challenges through the pandemic as well as then finding the perfect location in Gloucester County, brings them to an expected opening in Turnersville in the Summer of 2025.
While Monster Mini Golf has a consistent offering with their attractions (mini golf, arcade, mini-bowling and more), Bob tells me Turnersville will be a completely new design with an all-new mini golf experience and decor. For the thousands of loyal fans who love the Cherry Hill course, they absolutely will want to visit Turnersville for a completely new experience.
Regarding the building and Royal Bargains, if you missed our report last week the Royal Bargains Dollar Store is set to close by the end of January. The building had been listed for lease since earlier in the year, with Royal Bargains owners deciding to move to a new and smaller business (in the same center) called Royal Cardz which will focus on Collectible Cards and Party Balloons.
Located in the Shoppers Lane Plaza on the Black Horse Pike (to the side of Kohl’s), Monster Mini Golf Turnersville should prove to be an excellent location as the extended shopping center does get considerable customer traffic with Kohl’s, 5 Below, McDonald’s and more… not to mention excellent access from the Black Horse Pike, Route 42 and Greentree Road.
That being said, the addition of Monster Mini Golf will be a big “foot traffic” draw for the center and surrounding businesses, particularly area restaurants. Bob tells 42Freeway they do not sell food in their Monster Golf locations, and it’s only allowed in the Party Rooms… never within the attraction areas.
Based on their 5-year history in Cherry Hill, Bob says this creates a big opportunity for local restaurants… Many tens of thousands of dollars will likely be spent at local pizza shops supplying pizzas for kid’s birthday parties at the Monster Golf party rooms, or families deciding “after mini golf let’s stop at Cafe Merlino for delicious sandwiches to take home”
There are several reasons the couple chose to not offer an in-house snack bar… partly it’s the added requirements needed to operate one, but mostly they really pride themselves on keeping a very clean facility throughout the attraction areas, bathrooms and surrounding spaces… and only allowing food in the party rooms is a big part of that cleanliness goal.
Bob expects to employ approximately 30 individuals to staff the new facility. With Rowan University close by they have plans of working with Rowan regarding student job opportunities as well as special events and offerings for the University.
Loyal 42Freeway readers will note that earlier this year I reported on plans for a Monster Mini Golf to open in Mantua in the Timberline Shopping Center. While they were officially approved for the Mantua location, Bob and Randi decided to move forward with the Turnersville location instead.
Founded 20 years ago in the small quiet town of Danielson Connecticut by a husband and wife team, Monster Mini Golf now has 40 locations (open or planned) throughout the United States and Canada… offering a variety of interactive indoor attractions.
For Turnersville, the online presence has already started with the location page online at the main website, as well as a dedicated Facebook page (42Freeway is the first follower!)
The Monster Golf team are already working with Washington Township on approvals for the necessary remodeling aspects so that when they take possession of the space in February, construction can start almost immediately… with an expected June opening.
Bob is very excited about the new location.. as well as the “open arms” reception he has received from Washington Township. His initial visit to the township offices surprised him as almost instantly the employees (who all live in town) shared their excitement that Monster Golf was coming to town.
Within hours of submitting his application he heard from the Council President who offered congratulations, excitement.. as well as an additional contact within the municipal offices.
At 22,000 square feet the new Turnersville location is about 7,000 square feet larger than the Cherry Hill location. It features three different Party Rooms, with rooms 1 & 2 (depicted above) divided by a folding wall… which can open that space up to support larger parties
An all-new Monster Mini Golf course experience will be created for Washington Township including new props and characters.
If you’ve never played their indoor courses… the illusion of being in the dark is created by first painting the walls, ceiling and floor completely black, and then adding neon-glow painted golf hole dividers and props into the space. Dozens of black-lights located on the ceiling shine down… causing all of the course elements to glow!
It makes for a fun visual experience to the course, and when you see your glowing golf ball roll down towards the hole… it’s like you are playing inside of a video game!
A new Laser Tag room at 3,300 square feet will utilize a portion of the larger space in Turnersville. Also carrying a glow-in-the-dark monster theme to the game area’s obstacle course, guests use lasers to “tag” the opposing players.
Mini Bowling is offered in an innovative smaller size lane configuration which some would identify as duckpin bowling. The bowling balls are palm-sized and lighter than a traditional bowling ball… Slightly larger in size than a softball.
Arcade Games are a part of the experience featuring modern versions of classic style games such as Pac-Man or motorcycles, as well as “boardwalk” style ticket redemption games including skeeball.
The arcade area also offers Virtual Reality games as well as a Laser Maze. The Virtual Reality games bring the playing into the game via hi-tech goggles. Laser Maze is a new concept to me… players move through a maze of green laser beams to reach a destination trying not to “break” one of the beams, just like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible II!
I enjoyed chatting with Bob and Randi… they truly are excited to become part of the Washington Township community, and look forward to guests from surrounding communities making memories with their new Monster Golf location.
