Moira, the Queen’s Plate winner in 2022, proved in 2023 that she fit on the international stage when third behind Inspiral in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Saturday the 2022 Canada Horse of the Year did even better, winning the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf under a well-timed ride by Flavien Prat.
It was Prat’s second Breeders’ Cup race win in a row, as he also rode Sierra Leone to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Full Count Felicia, Moira’s stablemate in the Kevin Attard barn, took the lead immediately. Unlike in the E. P. Taylor (G1) on Sept. 14, when she opened a chasm between herself and the rest of the field, she only led narrowly over the likes of a keen Sunset Glory as well as Beautiful Love on the inside.
Meanwhile, Moira (5-1) tracked midpack, settled under Prat’s hands. Moira edged closer down the backstretch and then launched her bid for the lead around the last of three turns. She overtook Full Count Felicia approaching the furlong pole, and then held off rallied from both favored Cinderella’s Dream (5-2) to her outside and Didia (10-1) to her inside to win by half a length.
Cinderella’s Dream outfinished Didia by a nose for show, and it was another half length back to Beautiful Love in fourth. War Like Goddess completed the high five.
Moira finished the 1 3/8 miles in 2:14.95 over Del Mar turf rated firm, and paid $13.60 to win.
Moira is a 5-year-old mare by Ghostzapper out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Devine Aida. She had run in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare turf twice before, finishing fifth in 2022 and third in 2023. The win brought her career record to 17: 7-6-2, and was her first in Grade 1 company.
