MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – Winter golf in Minnesota. Yes, it’s possible this week, thanks to the January thaw.
What we know:
At least two golf courses have already announced plans to open this week.
Oak Summit Golf Club in Rochester opened on Tuesday, Jan. 28 for tee times with carts, and will also be open Thursday, Jan. 30.
Montgomery National Golf Club will open Thursday, Jan. 30 and Sunday, Feb. 2 for tee times with carts, and the course will host a noon shotgun, two-person scramble on Friday, Jan. 31.
What we don’t know:
Time will tell if more golf courses open this week to celebrate the January thaw. An updated list will be maintained at twincitiesgolf.com.
Last January, several golf courses opened up for winter golf during a warmup.
By the numbers:
Minnesota has nearly 500 golf courses, with nearly 90% open to the public.
What’s next:
There’s potential for record-breaking warmth in the Minnesota forecast. A cold front will bring slightly cooler temperatures in the mid to upper 30s on Wednesday, still well above the seasonable average of 24 degrees.
The warmth returns on Thursday along with plenty of sunshine and much lighter breezes. The Twin Cities metro is forecasted to hit a high of 49 degrees, which would break the current record high of 48 degrees set in 1989.
Temperatures dip slightly into the 30s on Friday and through the weekend, with a chance of precipitation, before temperatures plummet into the teens by Monday.
