Mirra Andreeva commented on the prospect of playing doubles with Andy Murray at the US Open.
One of the biggest talking points on the tennis circuit in 2025 is the change to the mixed doubles competition at Flushing Meadows.
Coming into operation this year, their mixed doubles tournament will be played in what is known as ‘Fan Week.’
It is usually held alongside the men and women’s singles and doubles events when the main draw commences, but now the mixed doubles competition will commence the week prior, which drew a divisive response from the tennis world.
From 2025 the size of the US Open mixed doubles field will decrease from 32 to 16 teams.
Furthermore, during the first three rounds, teams will need to win up to four games to win a set, while the final will be played with regular sets.
The likes of Rennae Stubbs does not agree with the change, while Taylor Fritz expressed his desire to take part in the competition.
Mirra Andreeva said she had not thought much about the changed event but if she did enter she would love to play alongside Andy Murray.
“I don’t think Andy’s going to play,” he said. “Well, I don’t know. I actually haven’t really thought about it. But I think it could be really fun. I think to have an opportunity to play with an ATP player on the same side of the court is great.
“Me, I don’t really care with who to play, if I would play. But of course it would be one of my dreams to play with Andy. If I would ask him, he would say, ‘Mirra, are you crazy, I’m not going to play.’
“I don’t think he wants to. I don’t think he will even have time for it. But everything can happen, so. Yeah, I don’t know if I will play. If I would, I would definitely have a lot of fun.”
Andreeva is one of the fastest rising stars on the WTA Tour and she is knocking on the door of the top 10 after reaching the Dubai Tennis Championships final.
She has caught the attention of other present and former players, including three-time Grand Slam champion Murray.
He defended her during her 2024 Australian Open third-round win over France’s Diane Parry.
The Brit criticised a commentator who said Andreeva needed to work on her mental game while she was trailing the final set 1-5, before she went on to win 7-6 in the third set.
“Andreeva down 5-1 in third,” Murray said on X. “Commentator ‘she really needs to work on the mental side of her game.
“‘She’s too hard on herself when she’s losing’ 30 minutes later 7-6 Andreeva wins. Maybe the reason she turned the match round is because of her mental strength.
“Maybe she turned the match around because she is hard on herself and demands more of herself when she’s losing/playing badly? Winner.”
