Michigan State football wasted no time pivoting to its 2026 recruiting class.
Jonathan Smith and his staff picked up a pledge from quarterback Kayd Coffman on Friday night. The Spartans’ second commitment for the 2026 class announced his decision on X, two days after the signing period for 2025 reopened.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound junior at East Kentwood High near Grand Rapids picked MSU over offers from Duke, Syracuse, Mississippi, Iowa State, Cincinnati and all three in-state Mid-American Conference schools. He is a three-star prospect according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings and is ranked as the No. 12 player in the state, the No. 37 quarterback nationally and No. 550 player overall in the country.
Coffman threw for nearly 1,600 yards and 12 touchdowns with two interceptions while completing 56.5% of his 184 passes in the fall for East Kentwood. He also ran for 237 yards and two TDs.
Returning MSU starter Aidan Chiles has two more years of eligibility remaining. The Spartans signed three-star quarterback Leo Hannan in December, and the California native enrolled in January. Smith took two quarterbacks in his first recruiting cycle, both of whom redshirted, in last season’s No. 3 quarterback Alessio Milivojevic and Ryland Jessee.
Coffman joins tight end Joey Caudill (Mansfield, Ohio), who announced his pledge in late January, as class of 2026 commits.
