It appears the Michigan football quarterback carousel has come full circle.
According to reports by CBS Sports and 247 Sports, the Wolverines are expected to start quarterback Davis Warren on Saturday night against Michigan State (7:30 p.m., Big Ten Network).
Warren began the season as U-M’s starting quarterback after he won a lengthy quarterback battle over Alex Orji decided in the final week of fall heading into the season opener against Fresno State.
STATE OF RIVALRY: This 2024 Michigan vs. Michigan State football game has more juice than you think
The time as a starter was short-lived for Warren, a 6-foot-4 and 200-pound former walk-on from Los Angeles. Warren completed 48 of 72 passes for 443 yards and two touchdowns in games against Fresno State State, Texas and Arkansas State. Warren, a leukemia survivor in high school, had at least one turnover in each contest and by the time he threw three interceptions by the middle of the third quarter vs. the Red Wolves, head coach Sherrone Moore felt he had no choice but to make a switch.
The move to Orji didn’t go well. Although he beat USC and Minnesota, U-M’s offense was anemic and didn’t have a single pass play of more than 16 yards through the air. He got another start at Washington, but Michigan fell behind 14-0 quickly and Moore made yet another switch, to former Indiana transfer Jack Tuttle.
Tuttle, the most experienced QB in the room, wasn’t available earlier in the season as he worked his way back from a series of injuries but was said to be throwing it at about “95%” according to Moore earlier this week and had been cleared by doctors for the majority of this month.
He, however, couldn’t protect the ball either. Tuttle committed four turnovers in five quarters against Washington and then a 21-7 loss to Illinois, which re-opened the competitoin. On Monday evening, Moore said that Tuttle was the leader in the clubhouse to start this week, but after a week of competition that has evidently changed.
