Michelle Wie West attended the Tomorrow Golf League (TGL) match on Monday, where Los Angeles Golf Club defeated The Bay Golf Club. Wie West is part of a star-studded list of co-owners of the Los Angeles team that includes Venus and Serena Williams, Alex Morgan and Shonda Rhimes, among others.
The visit couldn’t have been happier for the 2014 US Women’s Open champion, as Los Angeles defeated The Bay 5-3. It was San Francisco’s first loss of the season and gave the Angelenos the top seed in the playoffs.
However, there were other topics discussed during the match. Wie occupied a portion of the ESPN2 broadcast as she was interviewed by ESPN’s Marty Smith, and they discussed a topic that has been gaining momentum in recent weeks, the possible presence of women in the TGL.
The 5-time LPGA Tour winner revealed that it is a topic that has been talked about a lot, and not just in the recent past.
“We’ve had a lot of conversations about it.” Wie West said. “I would have loved to see the women be involved from Season 1.”
Several LPGA Tour stars have shown interest in TGL, and not just as players. Recently, Rose Zhang became a co-owner and ambassador for The Bay team, and she took the opportunity to say that players on the women’s tour would be great for the league.
“To start off, in my opinion, I’d love to see Meghan Khang hop on there,” Zhang told The New York Times. “She knows how to talk, that’s for sure. Charley Hull is a world renowned name, it’d be really entertaining to see what she does. If you want really good players, you’ve got Lydia Ko, you’ve got Nelly Korda.”
Meghan Khang herself has not been shy about voicing her interest in an eventual opening of the TGL to female players. During a recent visit to the SoFi Center, the one-time LPGA Tour winner expressed her support for the Boston team and said she would love to play in the league.
“This is super cool.” Khang said. “I hope to be part of it one day.”
But it’s not just the players who are talking. A heavyweight among the league’s team owners, Arthur Blank, said the addition of LPGA Tour players to the TGL represents countless benefits.
“It’s really unlimited,” Blank said. “I know that’s a really big word. The league will continue to expand. There will be other teams added to it over time. There will probably be other formats. Potentially, there will be gals involved, which will be great for the game as female golfers are playing more and more on-course and off-course. To me, it’s really, really unlimited.”
Blank is one of the owners of Atlanta Drive Golf Club, which will also participate in the inaugural season playoffs. His investment portfolio as a businessman includes other sports teams, including the NFL‘s Atlanta Falcons and MLS‘s Atlanta United FC.
