MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins star receiver Tyreek Hill wishes folks upset about their fantasy football team or sports bets wouldn’t approach him about it in public settings.
“It’s like I can’t even enjoy a night out with my wife and my kids,” Hill said Thursday. “Somebody’s always walking up to me and is like, ‘I drafted you number one and you’ve been having the worst fantasy football season of your career.’ And it’s like, bro, I do not literally care.”
Hill, 30, has been a Pro Bowler the first eight years of his career.
Last season Hill had 1,799 receiving yards. So far this year he has 523.
“We don’t really care about none of that, dawg,” Hill said. “As long as we’re winning. I feel like a lot of people get football mixed up. With stats. And worrying about where a guy’s going. Instead of worrying about the win-loss column.”
Hill said he was speaking with his Dad about how some things have changed.
“A lot of people have taken the game that I grew up loving so much and turned it into betting and turned it into fantasy numbers and stuff like that,” Hill said.
It’s a Catch-22 for the NFL.
They benefit from increased interest due to fantasy football and sports betting.
But it can make fans – short for fanatical, of course – behave with less couth toward players.
Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith, who has been producing more lately, says he mostly hears any fantasy football complaints on social media.
“Man, you’ve got people going crazy,” Smith said. “I mean, I’ve seen some bad…. wild stuff, like fans going at players they didn’t get them 10 points. ‘You couldn’t get me five points?’ or whatever it may have been. “
Smith says he has a bigger cause.
“I’m trying to do everything I can the organization, the city,” Smith said. “We’re putting our bodies on the line. It’s a lot bigger than some fantasy points.”
As for when Tyreek expects to make more big plays, which will, we suppose, lead to more points?
“Tua (Tagovailoa) understand what he has to work with on the field, so whenever that time comes, he’s going to take his shot,” Hill said. “Ya’ feel me? It just wasn’t our moment.”
