The Move fitness tracker will soon no longer be available for Meta Quest, disappointing VR fitness fans.
FACTS
Meta plans to shut down Move, its integrated VR fitness tracking system for Quest headsets, on March 31, 2025. After that date, the feature will no longer work in Meta Horizon OS or the Meta Horizon mobile app, according to an email sent to users.
The company claims the decision stems from Move’s outdated technology, which limits potential improvements for Quest users. Meta says removing Move will allow it “to deliver more advanced features to enhance the Quest experience”.
The shutdown only affects the core Move fitness tracker — other fitness features built into individual VR apps will continue working normally. However, all Move data will be permanently deleted after the shutdown, including information synced to the Meta Horizon mobile app.
CONTEXT
Move served as Quest’s built-in fitness tracker, letting users monitor calorie burn and exercise duration across workout-focused VR games like FitXR and Les Mills Bodycombat. The system offered personalized fitness goals and awarded trophies for reaching milestones.
In 2022, Meta expanded Move’s capabilities by adding synchronization with the Meta Horizon mobile app. iOS users could even connect their VR workouts to Apple’s Health app, allowing them to view VR exercise alongside other fitness metrics.
OPINION
For users who primarily use Quest for VR fitness, this change represents a significant loss. While many VR fitness apps include their own progress tracking, Move offered unique value by aggregating activity across multiple apps — including games like Until You Fall or Path of Fury that weren’t specifically designed as fitness apps but still provided good workouts.
Meta’s explanation about “legacy technology” raises questions, since the company could have updated or rebuilt Move instead of discontinuing it. The decision may reflect a desire to reduce development resources for features with smaller user bases. This follows a pattern — Meta recently shut down the Achievement app for Quest, later explaining the decision was due to low usage numbers. Let’s see what happens next.
