Morehead, Ky. — The Morehead State Men’s golf team claimed third place in the Eagles’ opener at the Joe Feaganes Invitational hosted by Marshall University at the 6,523-yard par 71 Guyan Golf and Country Club in Barboursville, W.Va.
The Eagles carded rounds of 283-271-286 for an 840 total, one stroke more than second-place Lindenwood. Marshall won with a three-round total of 824.
“There are a lot of positives to take away from this tournament,” said head coach Matthew Martin. “We prepared well as a team, and round two showed what our potential is when things are clicking. For the first event of the season, I am pleased, and we will work hard to be ready in a few days to travel to Tennessee for our next tournament.”
Junior Logan McCormick fired a final round 68, closing with five birdies over his last 10 holes. McCormick paced the Eagles, finishing with a two-under par 208 with rounds of 70-70-68 to finish in a tie for sixth.
“Logan led us in qualifying and he led us here today. He got off to a slow start but responded and really closed strong with those five birdies,” said Martin.
Senior Nolan Piazza finished in a tie for 14th after rounds of 76-63-72 (-2). Newcomer Remy Stalcup posted scores of 74-68-71 for a three-round total of 213 (E), tied for 23rd.
Morehead State used a big second round on Day 1 to put itself in position to battle for the win. The Eagles rode a career-low 63 by Senior Nolan Piazza in round two to post a 36-hole total of 554 (-14), for second place. Host Marshall led after day one at 546 (-22). Longwood was alone in third at 11 under par.
“Nolan was incredibly impressive in round two,” said Martin after the second round. “We showed great resilience as a group today after a bit of a slow first round,” he said.
Two freshmen made their first appearance for Morehead State. Seamus Bogun, playing as an individual, shot rounds of 72-69-71 for a 211 total to join Piazza in a tie for 14th in his Morehead State debut. Gavin Augenstein, also playing as an individual, posted a 215 total after rounds 70-72-74 in his debut for the Eagles. He provided a memorable highlight, holing out from 89 yards for eagle on the par-four ninth hole in round two.
