PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s golf team kicks off their spring slate on Sunday when they host the Vaqueros Intercollegiate at Playa Paraiso Golf Club.
The 54-hole event will feature 18 holes each day with the tournament running through Tuesday. Play will start on each day with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
Playa Paraiso Golf Club plays 6,701 yards and is a par 72.
The Competition
There will be a 15-team field that will feature UTRGV, Denver, UTEP, Western Carolina, UTSA, Louisiana-Monroe, SMU, UT Arlington, Seton Hall, Wichita State, California Baptist, Lamar, North Texas, Northern Colorado, and Abilene Christian.

Last Time Out
The Vaqueros closed out the fall season at the Monterrey Collegiate Classic where Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque won the individual championship.
Duque finished the tournament with a program record 203 with back-to-back rounds of 66 with a final round 71.
Luis Limón finished tied for 22nd with a three-round score of 214 with rounds of 72, 72, and 70. Arthit Kruaprayong and Esteban Gonzalez finished tied for 25th with three-round scores of 215. Kruaprayong posted rounds of 72, 70, and 70 while Gonzalez posted rounds of 75, 70 and 70.
Taj Sutherland tied for 56th with a three-round score of 225 with rounds of 78, 72, and 75 and Emilio Gil Leyva finished tied for 66th with a three-round score of 229 with rounds of 74, 79, and 76.
As a team, UTRGV finished in fifth place with a three-round score of 854 after posting rounds of 287, 278, and 289.
Last Time at Vaqueros Intercollegiate
UTRGV finished in fifth place at last year’s Vaqueros Intercollegiate. The Vaqueros finished with a three-round score of 905 after posting rounds of 313, 296, and 296.
VCU won the team title with a three-round score of 869 after posting rounds of 300, 287, and 282.
Javier Neira Garcia finished tied for 14th with a three-round score of 225 with rounds of 78, 76, and 71. Esteban Gonzalez tied for 18th with a three-round score of 226 with rounds of 76, 73, and 77.
Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque finished tied for 21st with a three-round score of 227 with rounds of 80, 73, and 74. Henry Wang finished tied for 34th with a three-round score of 233 after posting rounds of 85, 74, and 74.
Taj Sutherland finished in 45th with a three-round score of 242 with rounds of 79, 80, and 83 while Eddie Lai, who was competing as an individual, finished in 40th with a three-round score of 235 with rounds of 80, 77, and 78.
VCU’s Grayson Wood won the individual title with a three-round score of 210.
