Morehead, Ky.– The Morehead State Men’s golf team will travel to Huntington, West Virginia to play in the Joe Feaganes Invitational hosted by Marshall University to open the Eagles’ Fall slate September 9th and 10th.
The Eagles will compete against the host school Marshall, Belmont, Cleveland State, Dayton, LeMoyne, Longwood, Murray State, Northern Kentucky, Ohio, Purdue Fort Wayne, Radford and Youngstown State.
This marks the fourth straight season the Eagles have traveled to compete in the tournament at the Guyan Country Club. The course plays to a par of 71 at 6,523 yards. “We are excited to start competing down the road at Guyan,” said Morehead State head coach Matthew Martin. “Guyan certainly has some difficult holes, but it can yield some birdie opportunities.”
Martin said early qualifying has been competitive. “Qualifying scores have been very low across the board,” he said. “If we can find a way to shoot some of those same scores, we will be right in the mix to contend.”
Morehead State finished with a three-round composite score of 203 (-18) for a third-place finish in last year’s Joe Feaganes Invitational. This year’s only senior, Nolan Piazza paced the Eagles effort, shooting an 18 under par 203 to finish solo third out of 75 golfers.
Junior Logan Liles finished with a one under par 212 for a tie for 20th place. Both Liles and Piazza came out hot, firing matching 66’s in the opening round.
The tournament is the first of five fall events for Morehead State. The Eagles will travel to Jackson, Tennessee to play in the Grover Page Classic hosted by UT Martin on September 16th and 17th. They will travel to tournaments hosted by the University of Kentucky, Kennesaw State and Xavier before shutting down for the winter break.
