Daniel, W. Va. – The final day of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Men’s Golf Championship played Wednesday as the Wheeling Men’s Golf team competed in the team portion for the first time since 2016. The Cardinals would do one better than their finish that season, taking 4th in the field with a three-day score of 906. The Cardinals finished with one golfer in the top five and two in the top 10 of the event.

After finishing round two tied for first, sophomore Ryan Courtney would finish the event tied for second with a two-round score of 217. He finished the final round of competition shooting a 77, and finishing two strokes behind West Liberty’s Brogan Bennett for the top spot. Courtney began his day on the front nine and picked up his first par on hole two. He would shoot +3 on the first four holes and got a stroke back with his first birdie of the day on hole five. He would par on three of the final four holes and finished the front nine at +3. As he made the turn, he bogeyed on hole 10, but made up for it two holes later with an Eagle on hole 12. It brought him back to even for the back nine. He would add three more pars and another birdie on hole 18 to finish his round at +2 for the back nine and +5 for the day.

The other Cardinal to finish top 10 was Robin Duzmann, who took sixth in the field with a three-day score of 222. His front nine would be his best performance, as he out together a +2 through the first nine holes. He would hit par on five of the first seven holes, and asses a birdie on hole eight to round out the run. He would add two more birdies on the back nine of the event, and finished the round shooting a 76, finishing one stroke behind Courtney. The biggest bounce back of day three came from Phillip Halvorsen, who propelled himself into the top 20 of the event. He shot a tournament best 71 to finish at 229 for the three days. His back nine saw his best performance, picking up his first career Eagle on the final hole of the day. He shot -2 for the back nine rounding out his second career championship event.

The final two golfers of the event were MJ Darmawan and Luis Alvarez, With Alvarez providing the second biggest jump of the day. After sitting 41st following the second round, Alvarez would jump eight spots in the standings to finish 33rd with an 87. He picked up six pars on the day as he rounded out his first career championship event. Darmawan would be the final golfer of the day for the Cardinals, finishing 27th with a three day score of 272. He would shoot an 80 over the final 18 holes, picking up nine pars and one birdie to round out the event.

The Wheeling University Men’s Golf team now heads into the off-season as they prepare for their 2025 spring season.
