Mel Kiper Jr. isn’t sold on the quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL draft class. On Tuesday, the ESPN draft analyst weighed in on this year’s class of QBs while revealing who he believes the Tennessee Titans should draft with the No. 1 pick.
“When you pick No. 1, you want to get the best player and the quarterbacks aren’t the best player, or the second or the third best player. Some barely think they’re in the top 20,” Kiper said. “I have them at four and five. So, with that in mind, who is generational? As they said, they want a generational talent.
“That would be Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter… You’ve got to love the quarterback. If you love Cam Ward, you bring him in, you see if Will [Levis] develops. If he doesn’t, you got Cam Ward developing. Cam Ward gets beaten out. JJ McCarthy was drafted. Sam Darnold was brought in. How’d that work out? JJ got hurt. Sam became the guy.”
In short, Kiper isn’t convinced the best quarterbacks in the draft class are guaranteed to have success in the NFL and teams may be better off trying to pick up a veteran QB in free agency.
Miami‘s Cam Ward and Colorado‘s Shedeur Sanders are widely regarded as the two top QBs entering this year’s NFL Draft. Although there’s plenty of hype around the two standouts, they haven’t impressed NFL scouts nearly as much as QBs like Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels did last year.
Mel Kiper Jr. believes the Titans should stick with QB Will Levis and, instead, draft a player who can help the Titans in other areas such as two-way star Travis Hunter or EDGE Abdul Carter.
“Do you take the best player, which in my opinion, is Travis Hunter, then go get a Sam Darnold? Or, do you take a Cam Ward and pass on the best player in the draft? It’s going to be an interesting discussion,” Kiper said.
“I’ll tell you what, a lot of fascinating things that go on between now and the draft, in relationship to Tennessee, who, oh, by the way, better shore up the right tackle spot. That was a disaster on the offensive line this past year and certainly impacted Will Levis.”
Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see who the Titans take with the No. 1 overall pick. The 2025 NFL Draft will take place from April 24-26 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
