McQuaid still Class AA’s team to beat: New York state football rankings for Oct. 2
A back-and-forth affair between undefeated Class AA teams Hilton and McQuaid last Friday ended in the Knights’ favor.
The result, a 28-24 final, did little to shake up the New York state rankings for this week. The two teams, for the second consecutive week, and the only two listed among the state’s best in Class AA.
McQuaid, the five-time defending Section V champions, has continued to squeak out dramatic wins over its competition. The Knights’ margin of victory this season is five points — a figure boosted by their 12-point win over Penfield in Week 3.
McQuaid will likely need its best over the next two weeks with matchups against Aquinas (3-1) and UPrep (winners of two straight). The latter is a rematch of last season’s Class AA section title game.
Hilton, similarly, could have its hands full this weekend when the Cadets take on the aforementioned Griffins at Marina Auto Stadium on Saturday.
Section V football rankings: Top teams entering Week 5
Biggest riser: East High/World of Inquiry — The Eagles’ win over Monroe on Saturday proved the most consequential of the week. East/WOIS has won three straight, rising from 21st in the Sept. 18 Class A rankings to eighth.
Biggest faller: Monroe — The Red Jackets coughed up a two-touchdown lead against East/WOIS, and in the process their defense allowed their first points against since September 2023. The loss dropped Monroe from seventh in last week’s rankings to 16th this week.
