Internal improvement will be the key for the Los Angeles Lakers to improve on how they did last season when they won 47 games, got the seventh seed in the Western Conference and lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Denver Nuggets.
Perhaps their most promising young player who isn’t a rookie is Max Christie. He is entering his third NBA season, and after failing to see increased playing time last year, he could be set for a breakout campaign.
Instead of truly testing free agency, he decided to sign a four-year, $32 million contract to remain with the Lakers earlier this summer. In an interview with Los Angeles-based Spectrum SportsNet, he talked about how he focused on his mental approach during this offseason.

“How important the mental game is for me,” Christie answered. “How confident I feel right now and that’s really a big byproduct of what I’ve worked on this summer. It’s been a big part of my mental game. I feel like I have the skills, like you said. Offensively, I shoot the ball pretty well and defensively I’m athletic enough and I have good instincts to guard people. So for me I think it’s just having the confidence to be able to put that into action this year when I am out there on the floor.”
Christie’s stats increased minimally during the 2023-24 season, and he saw his 3-point efficiency drop from 41.9% the previous season to 35.6%. He’s reportedly “on track for real minutes” according to a recent Los Angeles Times report, and a big year from him could even solve one of L.A.’s biggest roster needs: a legitimate 3-and-D wing.
